The “Mencho Correntino”

Before the arrival of the Europeans Iberá was occupied by indigenous peoples. It then became a border area which naturally delimited the territory occupied by the Spanish to the north and by the Jesuits on the margin of the Uruguay River.

After the Jesuits were forced to leave and when neighboring villages began to attack, part of the missionary Guarani people took refuge on the banks of Iberá and after consensually deciding that they would belong to the province of Corrientes, founded the towns of San Miguel and Loreto. Many of these men found work on the estancias that belonged to the Spanish and the “Criollos” resulting in the “Mencho”, a valued worker due to their loyalty to the employer, their special knowledge of Nature and skill in rural tasks (since they came from the old jesuit estancias).
