Rowing down the Great Northern Estancias

Near Loreto lies the source of the Carambola stream. This is where the Jesuits set up their cattle ranches which were eventually managed by the "che patrones” (ranchers) of Corrientes.

These large areas were populated by herding the cattle through the sandy hills that run northeast to southwest, which is where Route 12 between Posadas and Corrientes goes through today. Sailing the wedged Carambola stream which runs along the sandy hills, is a way to see these great ranches in their best natural conditions.

When the Park Ranger Station and the port are finished, it will be possible to access this area from Loreto and then go on a three day sail up to the Paraná Lagoon near San Miguel.

Currently you can visit a section of this stream and some of the historical Estancias, such as San Juan Poriahu, either by Route 118 or from San Miguel.

The farmhouse and campsite of Estancia San Nicolas are open to the public. They are well provided with equipment to stroll along the stream, to kayak, to drift on punting pole canoe down the open channels through the floating islands, to snorkel in the clear waters to spot dorados and stingrays or to go riding for hours or days recalling the footsteps of the herders and eating “guisos carreros” (local stews) under the stars.

Everything is waiting to be discovered and experienced in this area of Iberá. Access has improved and wildlife of the stream has slowly grown as a result of the quiet work of rangers and biologists and also due to the productive reorientation of the farms in the area turning to ecotourism and wildlife conservation.
